about
I started writing Hey Man just after the 2016 election, in the aftermath, the dull cloud and shock, the bomb of an inauguration day (I mean, who couldn’t see that the mall was empty, come on!), the debacle after debacle of the early days of this administration, which still shows no signs of un-debacling. It’s very specifically directed at Trump, and Steve Bannon is referenced pretty clearly in the chorus. But speaking of old news, I hadn’t even finished writing the song before ol’ Steve was kicked out of the house. So my classic little protest song was one of the many things that just couldn’t quite keep up with the news cycle. But as with all songs of resistance and protest, they unfortunately never seem to go out of style. As in, we still need to be standing up to this tyrant of a president and all of the jerk-faces he surrounds himself with and keeps trying to ram into positions of importance forever. It will be a great day when we don’t need songs of protest anymore! But judging by the juggernaut of continuous damage wrought over the last few years, I think that day is a ways off.

LYRICS
And all day the sun keeps giving us hope
“I'll teach you how to burn” it says “I’ll teach you how to hold”
“I'll show you how to take back from the bad men who stole,
and tried to trade this world in for a greedy handful of money”
See you can’t string up the sky with your pulleys and your ropes
No you can’t build a world on lies you can’t dim what’s bright
You can’t knife the good and still expect to sleep at night
You know we read the news that you can’t even find the lights
Well hey Man, in your big chair
We didn’t put you there, no not at all
You see us in the streets, you can’t count but we don’t cheat
We know how you hate to feel small
And hey men, next to the president
Nobody voted for you, no not at all
You think that God did? Who are you trying to kid
She’ll make sure from her graces you’ll fall
Ooh you can’t buy, no you can’t buy the sun
Ooh let it shine from inside everyone
And all day we sing what we know
By the sun’s light we’re raised to make welcome our home
We don’t turn our friends away, we don’t place our bets on hate
We win with generosity we give more than we take
And oh hey Man, in your big chair
We didn’t put you there, no not at all
You see us in the streets, you can’t count but we don’t cheat
We know how you hate to feel small
And hey men, next to the president
Nobody voted for you, no not at all
You think that God did? Who are you trying to kid
She’ll make sure from her graces you’ll fall
Ooh you can’t buy, no you can’t buy the sun
Ooh let it shine from inside everyone
Ooh you can’t buy, no you can’t buy the sun
Ooh let it shine from inside everyone

I love Tanya from her Belly stuff, mainly the 2nd album...plus Pretty Deep, etc. but to hear this cover of the 80’s classic by Vince & Alison was just too delicious James Ingles
